What exactly is a ‘useful’ vocabulary for our students to learn? When we think of vocabulary we often think of typical semantic sets (sports, colors, food). But the speaker demonstrates that there is much more we need to teach in order to equip students with an effective vocabulary for conversation. She considers the use of collocation (get a degree, go out for dinner), commonly used response items (Okay, That would be nice.), ‘conversational’ vocabulary (I mean,… So, anyway), and “chunks’ of language (as sentence frames in expressions like I don’t know if…or in vague expressions like or something, and things like that, or greetings like ‘Good morning’). The speaker also considers – given the importance of teaching a wide range of vocabulary – how we can help students learn vocabulary more effectively and efficiently. She demonstrates a variety of engaging vocabulary activities, suitable for all levels of students. |

Critical Thinking Activities that Make Ideas Matter |
|
|
Promoting
critical thinking skills can deepen learning while teaching even lower to
intermediate level students that their perspectives are valued. Using ideas
designed to enrich Passages and Interchange, but appropriate for any
classroom, the presenter demonstrates activities and techniques that
encourage critical thought and make ideas matter. Handouts including a
bibliography of suggested readings are provided. |

電腦科技已為我們的生活帶來不少的衝擊與影響，互動電子白板(Interactive Whiteboard，以下簡稱IWB)就是媒體資訊傳播發達時代的產物，透過IWB，老師就能輕鬆地同時運用影音、圖片、Powerpoint、flash…等多樣化的教材，在教學過程中隨時可播放影片，不需費神地操作多台機器，一會兒開音響，一會兒跑去操作電腦，只要簡單地操作IWB，就能呈現豐富多元的教學內容。 過去習慣的黑板/白板書寫，改成IWB，老師可以不用再吸到漫天的粉筆灰，也不需吸聞白板筆的化學氣味，同時有多種顏色和粗細的筆，能在文件、表格或圖片上書寫標記，方便老師進行補充與加強說明。所有上課內容也都能完整保留，自動儲存成Powerpoint、PDF、DOC或HTML等多種格式，學生就能更專心地聽老師講課了。 IWB進一步搭配無線手寫版，老師就能自在地進行走動教學，又能操作IWB，與學生的互動能更密切。搭配設計精巧的投票器，課堂上隨時能進行即時測驗，測驗結果馬上能顯示與統計學生的學習狀況，如此一來，學生也會更有課堂參與感。 |

Helen Sandiford
has extensive experience as a teacher, teacher trainer, and ELT Sales and
Marketing specialist. She spent nine years in Japan setting up EFL programs,
and teaching in Japanese senior high schools and vocational colleges. She
has presented widely throughout the
Asia and
South America
as co-author of Touchstone (CUP, 2004) - a four-level adult English language
course. She continues to develop and write text book materials for
Cambridge University Press from her home in Utah, U.S.A. |

| Chuck Sandy has directed English language programs and taught in universities, language institutes, and teacher-education centers in Japan, the United States, Korea, and Brazil. In addition, he is a frequent lecturer on English language teaching throughout Asia, South America, and the United States. He is Professor of English Language and Culture at Chubu University in Japan. | |
